Microsoft Unveils WS2008 Editions.
2007-11-16, HostMan.biz Microsoft announced at the TechEd IT Forum 2007 that Windows Server 2008 will be available in nine different versions. The software giant says WS2008 will be available from as little as $28 or as much as $2,999 per processor based on the edition. Most of the server editions will be available with or without Microsoft's server virtualization technology, which has been renamed from Viridian to Hyper-V, but company officials believe most copies will be sold with virtualization capabilities. Six versions of WS2008 include Hyper-V, while three do not. The basic version is Windows Server 2008 Standard, which comes with five client access licenses and will cost $999 with Hyper-V, $971 without. The next level up is Windows Server 2008 Enterprise edition, which comes with 25 client access licenses and can run four concurrent virtual instances for $3,999 or $3,791 without Hyper-V. Windows Server 2008 Datacenter can be used for any high-end data center that deploys business-critical applications. The solution is priced at $2,999 per processor, or $2,971 without Hyper-V. Microsoft is also offering Microsoft Hyper-V Server, which will be a tiny version of the server, enabled only to support the creation and management of virtual machines running on a server. Microsoft is also offering a WS2008 for Itanium-based systems, Windows Web Server 2008, the successor to Windows Server 2003 Web Edition. Microsoft unveiled a broad range of new products and programs at TechEd IT Forum 2007 to help customers prepare for the next generation of dynamic IT. |
