Sun Reports on Project BlackBox World Tour.

Sun Microsystems, today announced that from December 18-20, Sydney will be the final stop on a world tour of its Project Blackbox data centre, an innovation Sun believes will answer the prayers of many a chief information officer who needs a chunk of computing power in a hurry. Housed in a 6m by 2.5m by 2.5m standard-sized steel container can be about 250 Sun Fire blade servers and as much as 1.5PB of disk storage, 2PB of tape storage, and 7TB of RAM. The container just needs to be positioned next to a power source to run the equipment and the cooling system, a water source for the cooling, and a network cable, and it is ready for business. Additionally, a shock absorption system enables transportation by standard shipping. The company claims that the container can withstand a 1.6m drop on to concrete without damage to the contents, and the company tested it in a simulated 6.7 magnitude earthquake. The company also reckons that Project Blackbox will cost a hundredth of the initial cost of a traditional 10,000sqft data centre. The actual hardware inside the container doesn't have to be Sun's, although the company offers a discount if it is. Blackbox also requires about one-third of the space of a conventional deployment with equivalent computing power. Savings are achieved by speeding deployment cycles, using standard components, optimising performance, power, and cooling, and enabling customers to place data centres in the most cost-effective locations for their businesses. "We were originally excited about making these systems really energy-efficient and inexpensive to operate. The early adopters we talk to are much more taken with the notion that Project Blackbox is prefab and fast. People are saying they need something in 30, 60, 90 days and they need it to work," Sun chief technology officer Greg Papadopoulos says. Although a Blackbox can be installed in 90 days, there are potential problems. Zoning laws might restrict where businesses can place the containers, and then there is security. Some analysts say a Blackbox could be a target for thieves. Nathan Brookwood, an analyst with Insight 64, says customers shouldn't be too worried. "I believe the security angle is receiving a bit too much play. Organisations that worry about thieves hauling their data centre away can locate the containers inside secure facilities, instead of keeping it in a parking lot." |
