Pertineo Chooses Pillar SAN Solution.
2006-07-10, HostMan.biz Pillar Data Systems, a leading provider of enterprise network storage systems, today announced Pertineo chose Pillar to implement a SAN storage solution capable of meeting its increasing facilities management activity and optimizing the availability of its installation. Full deployment of the solution, including testing, platform installation and migration of the 35 client environments, took only two months. Pertineo is a managed service provider that provides operational responses to companies looking to outsource their production computing system to avoid the difficulties inherent in rolling out new technologies (costs, expertise, infrastructures, high availability). These solutions are based around new types of marketing (ASP model, generic brands, etc.), offshore development and operations teams. The company also offers its services to ASP operators, call centre operators for their hotline and support platforms, banks and eCommerce sites. The need for a high availability solution Pertineo already had an advanced technical solution based on resource sharing and optimization. It had reached its limitations due to an increase in customer numbers. Consequently, the need for a more industrialized solution with a high level of uptime based on SAN technology and virtualization quickly took hold. It had to guarantee Pertineo's service levels. It's business model is focused on minimum downtime (high availability), and more importantly to guarantee that in the event of data loss to one or more client servers, recovery would only take a few minutes. Furthermore, to satisfy its customers' requirements, Pertineo had to implement a flexible, scalable system that could easily be administered from India (Bangalore and Bombay). This was one of the project's specific requirements, since supervision and daily administration (facilities management) are entrusted to offshore teams, but the platform and customer data are hosted in a Paris-based data center, which is a cutting-edge facility in terms of security, power supply and air conditioning. To maintain a high quality of service, Pertineo was therefore on the lookout for an interruption-free high availability solution with quick deployment. In addition to the technical constraints of the required solution, Pertineo also placed the physical size in the racks, power consumption and heat output were top priorities. The reason for this is straightforward: the solution proposed by Pertineo to its customers is only viable through a controlled TCO (Total Cost of Ownership). Pillar Data Systems' Axiom: the ideal solution "The solution put forward by Pillar Data Systems was the perfect response to our problem, combining ease of implementation and administration, an unrivalled TCO compared to the other key market players and quick deployment," said Erwan Bellec, CEO of Pertineo. "Furthermore, Pillar's technical and customer support met with our expectations, high level of availability and true expertise." Pillar's virtualized and centralized storage solution was one of the key elements in Pertineo's decision. The storage solution was deployed for 11 customers using a single storage platform currently managing around 100 different server environments. The solution was deployed outside working hours, so as to avoid any disruption to the business activities of Pertineo's customers. Successful installation After a two-week full-scale selection and test phase at the publisher's site, the SAN was installed at Pertineo in March 2006. The physical installation of the platform was carried out over one day. The system was switched over to the live environment over a four-week period, thereby enabling the local and offshore teams enough time to adjust and approve the operations and backup procedures tailored to the Pillar solution. The old storage infrastructure was migrated to Pillar's solution over two nights. The operational services of Pertineo's customers, who are now hosted on the SAN, were not affected for more than four hours in total. Performance on target Bellec added, "The increase in performance since the implementation of the Pillar Axiom has been significant with a 100% match with what we measured during benchmarking. The actual client servers take less than 30 seconds to start up, opposed to two minutes before. The SQL servers (MS SQL and MySQL) are capable of processing around three times more transactions per second, without any modifications to the software and hardware. Pillar's SAN therefore provides immediate, quantifiable benefits for our customers." After several months of operation, there is no doubt as to the robustness of Pillar's solution in high-availability configuration: all availability indicators for Pertineo's platform have clearly been improved since Pillar's SAN was implemented. "The expected reduction in TCO has been confirmed," said Bellec. "Based on 24/7 operation, we need three times less personnel to administer the Pillar platform, compared to our old storage solution. As a result, we carry out maintenance during the day instead of at night, since there is no impact on the customer. What used to take hours now takes a matter of minutes. The monthly savings we now make through our ability to offshore are evident." Bellec concluded, "Power consumption with the Pillar system has also been reduced. By way of an example, the energy consumption of our SAN is comparable to that of our firewalls, and its heat output is equivalent to two small production servers. Consequently, we avoid the consumption surcharge that we would have had to pay every month to our data center, if we had chosen one of the other solutions on the market." In addition to the quick, daily backup system helping to optimize the TCO, the SAN solution from Pillar Data Systems also opens up other major business prospects for Pertineo. The hosting company can now pledge its commitment to an unrivalled quality of service. "Pillar's QoS concept combined with the TCO module makes the Axiom range a solution especially geared towards Pertineo's business model,' said Marc-Henri Guy, director of Southern Europe for Pillar Data Systems. "We are delighted that our solution is one of the components guaranteeing Pertineo's high quality of service and contributing to its success." |
