GN Data Center Unveils Liquid-Cooled Data Center.
2006-05-19, HostMan.biz GN data center, Inc., announces the development of the first entirely liquid-cooled Internet data center. The data center is expected to become operational in late 2006 to early 2007. Because data center heat loads are increasing and real estate and electricity are becoming more expensive, the economics of the liquid-cooled data center will be more and more relevant. By quadrupling equipment density (in excess 20 kW per cabinet), substantial savings are possible over data centers using conventional air-conditioning. A perfect match for high-density blade server technology, the liquid-cooled data center allows more hardware in a smaller space. Since cooling is brought into the cabinet directly, equipment will operate at lower and more uniform temperatures, which increases reliability. The goal of GN data center is to provide the highest equipment density to achieve operating economies unavailable in conventional data centers. The use of state-of-the-art, redundant, battery-free continuous power and 2N redundant cooling ensures simplicity and high availability. The data center is designed for 7x24x365 operation. When completed, GN data center will be an ITIL-compliant facility and be operated continuously by on-site trained technicians. Located midway between Chicago and Milwaukee, GN data center would be unaffected by regional urban disasters but would be close enough to allow rapid access to data and equipment by car. The 40,000-square-foot facility is windowless and nondescript on the exterior and constructed of poured-in-place reinforced concrete. Security will be tightly controlled and all visitors will be escorted. GN data center supports fiber from two physically independent carriers for redundancy and accessibility. With a 10-gigabit-per-second infrastructure, the data center will be able to accommodate considerable growth for high-density, high-performance, and business-continuity applications. |
