Lucent and IBM Collaborate Joint BladeCenter.
2006-04-07, HostMan.biz Lucent Technologies today at the Cellular Telecommunications and Internet Association Wireless 2006 show, announced a joint IP Multimedia Subsystem - based solution with IBM. Lucent customers will now have the option to deploy parts of Lucent's IMS portfolio on the IBM BladeCenter family of servers. The incorporation of blade server technology is the result of IBM and Lucent's recently announced relationship. The companies are developing joint IMS-based solutions to help accelerate the introduction of new blended services for wireless and wireline carriers and help reduce service providers' capital and operating expenses, enabling them to focus on delivering new revenue producing services. "Making Lucent's technology available on IBM's industry-leading BladeCenter platform provides our customers the flexibility to deploy parts of Lucent's IMS portfolio on the platform that best meets their needs," said John Marinho, corporate strategic marketing vice president, Lucent Technologies. "IBM's platform will also be interoperable with Lucent's existing platform." IBM's portfolio of blade servers provides a single, open, standards-based architecture that can be deployed either in the data center or within a central office. "IBM's BladeCenter family of products is leading the industry. The BladeCenter T is designed specifically to address the unique needs and requirements of the telecom industry," said Jim Pertzborn, Telecommunications Industry vice president, IBM Technology Collaboration Solutions. "The deployment of a joint IMS reference architecture with Lucent is a key example of IBM's OEM strategy and is a response to the overwhelming industry demand to help clients take advantage of new opportunities and to aggressively move into adjacent markets." IMS is the new core and service architecture that enables the convergence of data, voice, video and multimedia technology over an IP-based infrastructure. The IMS infrastructure must be able to scale and adapt over time -- freeing service providers to focus on differentiated services instead of focusing on the underlying infrastructure to support those services. Also at CTIA, in the Lucent booth, Lucent and IBM are demonstrating the inter-working of Lucent's Active PhoneBook application and IBM Workplace Collaboration Services(TM) for enterprise applications that enables a blended service across wireless and private/enterprise networks. The ability to offer blended services across wireless and private networks will allow carriers to offer end-users lifestyle services at work, at home or on the go. As part of a broader technology collaboration relationship, Lucent and IBM have developed more than a dozen joint offers including the inter-working between IMS and IPTV with Caller ID, and IMS and web services inter-working. Lucent and IBM have already completed proof-of-concept testing of several of these offers with service providers in Europe, Asia and North America. |
