Cox opens first public data center.
2006-03-30, HostMan.biz The cable and telecom provider opened the Cox Managed Solutions Center in north Phoenix to provide business customers with secure colocation space for their data and infrastructure needs. Thecenter also will offer voice, transport and private-line services as well as Internet access at speeds of up to 1 gigabyte per second. As the company embarks on this new business venture, it will be competing with local data centers and other major telecom providers that have similar facilities around the Valley. Cox officials say the impetus behind the center was its customers. "We've had these kinds of facilities, but always just for our own use," said Josh Nelson, Cox Arizona director of information technology. "We heard from customers who wanted this type of center, and we responded." Data centers such as Cox's provide the ability for businesses to operate in the event of a commercial power failure at their location caused by a natural or man-made disaster. In a business era when "down time" can cripple many businesses, having secured backup data locations that operate 24/7/365 has become increasingly important. Cox's 45,000-square-foot data center has been designed for medium- to enterprise-sized businesses, as well as government and educational institutions. It provides high-bandwidth connectivity to support clients' networking requirements, data and bandwidth-intensive applications and disaster recovery and business continuity objectives. Jeff Greenberg, Cox Arizona director of marketing, said the company made a "sizable investment" to create the center, but thinks there's plenty of business to be had. "We would not have jumped into this if we did not feel like there was demand for these services in and out of Arizona," he said. "There is a need for this in the state, and we think it will be profitable." The Cox Managed Solutions Center will be competing with similar data facilities around town, but Cox officials say its bandwidth capabilities give it an advantage. "The difference with us is that we are a bandwidth company first" Nelson said. "This facility is connected to all our other locations, and we can offer this as a part of all our other services." While the facility marks a new area of business for Cox, it didn't create any new jobs. The center is staffed by a handful of security personnel. AT&T, which has a 100,000-square-foot data center in Mesa, likely is Cox's biggest local competitor in the data-center arena. AT&T opened that facility in 2002, and at the time, cited "exploding regional demand" as motivation for doing so. Company spokesman John Britton said the facility has performed well. |
