Oracle Acquires Sleepycat Software.
2006-02-15, HostMan.biz Continuing a recent shopping spree, business software maker Oracle Corp. on Tuesday announced the acquisition of Sleepycat Software, which provides development tools used in open-source databases. Oracle didn't disclose how much it paid for Emeryville, Calif.-based Sleepycat, a sign that the sales price was relatively small. Privately held Sleepycat started in 1996, shortly after its founders developed what would become the company's mainstay product — Berkeley DB. The Sleepycat deal continued Oracle's efforts to broaden its menu of products through a series of acquisitions that have been highlighted a last year's $11.1 billion takeover of PeopleSoft Inc. and a $5.85 billion purchase of Siebel Systems Inc. completed last month. Oracle has spent nearly $20 billion buying other companies since the end of 2004. The investment hasn't paid off for Oracle's shareholders so far as the company's market value has declined by about $4 billion since the expansion began. With the Sleepycat acquisition, Oracle signaled its increasing interest in the open-source software movement, which encourages developers to distribute their products for free over the Internet. That's a change for Oracle, which collects billions of dollars each year by licensing the rights to use its database and business applications software. Developers of open-source software generally make money through maintenance and support, another lucrative avenue for Redwood Shores, Calif.-based Oracle. While it digests its past acquisitions, Oracle has made it clear that it intends to continue to gobble up smaller companies. Oracle reportedly is negotiating to buy at least two other open-source software makers, Atlanta-based JBoss Inc. and Cupertino, Calif.-based Zend Technologies Inc. |
