Sex.com Sold to Escom LLC For $14M.
2006-01-20, HostMan.biz Sex.com, owned by Gary Kremen has been sold for a record fee of $14 million to a Boston-based company called Escom LLC, the Adult industry newsletter Xbiz reported. Gary Kremen was unavailable for comment, but a source from Kremen's company, Grant Media, said that sales for the domain name will still be handled through Grant Media's San Francisco offices. Mr. Kremen was the first to register Sex.com in 1994 along with a collection of other generic names, however in 1995 Stephen Cohen fraudulently transferred the domain to his name and built up a large pornographic empire. After a long battle in the courts, ownership was restored to Mr Kremen in 2000, and Mr. Cohen was ordered to pay $US65m. Prior to the sale of Sex.com, numerous adult industry message board postings had already begun speculating on the sale after noticing the radical change in the appearance of the Sex.com website. The site is copyrighted by Escom. The Sex.net domain is still registered under Kremen's Grant Media company. |
