Salesforce.com Formally Launches AppExchange.
2006-01-19, HostMan.biz After months of discussion, features announcements, and live previews, Salesforce.com has officially launched AppExchange, an online marketplace for hosted business applications. The service was created to give developers and Salesforce.com customers the ability to distribute applications easily through the Salesforce.com platform. Also called "The Business Web" by Salesforce, the service consists of a network of on-demand applications, services, components, and development efforts geared toward enabling customers to run an entire business on-demand. Over 150 business applications already are on the marketplace from Salesforce partners, such as Adobe Systems and Skype, ranging from document-management applications to financial software. In announcing The Business Web, Salesforce took a shot at the traditional software model, which it said "relies on monolithic providers controlling the pace of innovation, with customers waiting impatiently for new features and upgrades and responsible for their own integration and implementation." Company chief executive Marc Benioff went a step further, calling The Business Web "the end of software," given its ability to leverage the creativity of an entire community of developers. Applications built for the AppExchange are run entirely on demand, eliminating the need for a company to hire its own in-house developers. Enterprises also will be able to cut down on creating and managing data centers and complex infrastructure, Salesforce noted, because no applications will be running in-house. Salesforce.com claims that over 75,000 "test drives" of applications on the exchange were taken during the marketplace's formal preview period, which has been going on for the past several months. For its official launch, the company revamped the user interface and added several features, including an integrated campaign builder, customizable forecasting, and more streamlined analytics capabilities. One of the features within AppExchange that is likely to be warmly received by developers is Sandbox, a service that allows customers to test applications found either on the exchange or built in-house. Sandbox is designed to be simple to use, with "one-click" access to an on-demand production environment that includes customization, integration, testing, and development. As its name suggests, the service gives companies the ability to test new applications and customize them without having to put them in a live environment. Larger enterprises, in particular, will gravitate toward Sandbox as well as AppExchange, said Forrester analyst Liz Herbert. "With real-time updates and development, Sandbox has distinctive features," she said. "It's an important part of AppExchange and allows enterprises to explore the exchange more deeply." |
