Sun Offers More Software Free.
2005-12-02, HostMan.biz Sun Microsystems (sun.com) deepened its presence in open source this week, saying that it would offer the Java Enterprise System, Sun N1 management software and its C, C++ and Java developer tools for free. The move comes about a year after the company began offering the Sun Solaris operating system free of charge. Sun says it will bundle all the free software with the Solaris operating system, calling the integrated package the Solaris Enterprise System. Sun's push into open source is drastically altering its business model. While the company is making the software available free of charge, customers will have to pay for service and support. The company also hopes that more widespread use of its software will encourage customers to buy its hardware and storage gear. Analysts say Sun's new offerings and revamped business model are designed to help it regain market share lost to the open source Linux operating system and Microsoft. |
