Solaris 10 Supports Postgres Database.
2005-11-18, HostMan.biz Sun Microsystems (sun.com) announced on Friday that it would distribute and support the open source Postgres database (postgresql.org) with the Sun Solaris operating system. The company also added 128-bit file system Solaris ZFS, Solaris containers for Linux applications and Xen virtualization support to OpenSolaris. "We continue to redefine how people think of the operating system," says John Loiacono, executive vice president of software for Sun. "I don't see how any vendor can survive long term without offering a full spectrum of services - ranging from the file system, networking, management, virtualization, observability, provisioning and database, widely available and open source." Sun says it will provide worldwide support for Postgres and is working with the Postgres SQL community to take advantage of the technologies in Solaris 10. "We look forward to collaborating with Sun's engineers, both in optimizing PostgresSQL on Solaris and improving PostgresSQL performance in general," says Josh Berkus, of the PostgresSQL project core team. "Solaris's reputation for reliability and scalability make it a very desirable platform for expanding the PostgresSQL user base into new and larger enterprises." Sun has distributed more than 3.3 million licenses for the Solaris 10 operating system, which is now supported on almost 500 Sun x86 and AMD Opteron processor systems from a variety of vendors including IBM, HP and Dell. The company says the next update of Solaris 10 will be available in December. |
