OSDL Launches Patent Reference Library.
2005-11-16, HostMan.biz Linux-promoting organization the Open Source Development Labs (osdl.org) announced on Tuesday it had launched its online patent commons reference library. As the foundation of the group's Patent Commons Project (www. patentcommons.org), the library is designed to instill greater confidence in open source software for developers and customers. The library hosts searchable databases that include more than 500 patents pledged to date and more than a dozen technical standards supported by patent pledges and covenants. Visitors can browse the site - which is open to developers, users and vendors - for information about patents and technology pledges promoting open source software and standards. "The OSDL Patent Commons Project is an important first step in helping customers, vendors and the development community understand the different commitments that have been made and how they work to reduce the chances of patent litigation," says Stuart Cohen, CEO of OSDL. "The Project is focused on documenting the growing number of pledges and other legal solutions directed at the software patent issue, so that developers can innovate and collaborate as free as possible from litigation." The Patent Commons Web site will list the existing patent commitments from companies and individuals who want to retain ownership of their patents, as well as information about different types of pledges and covenants and how they work. The site will also expand in coming months to include open source licenses, indemnification programs and information on how organizations and individuals can contribute to the commons. |
