GoDaddy Taps Patent for Sales Push. 2005-11-09, HostMan.biz According to reports released this week, domain registrar and Web host Go Daddy (godaddy.com) is using a patent recently filed by search giant Google (google.com) to boost its own domain sales. The patent application - a take on search engine spam-fighting filed recently by Google - discusses a strategy of identifying domains registered for longer periods of time as more valuable than those registered for short periods, and more likely to be the ‘Valuable (legitimate) domains are often paid for several years in advance, while doorway (illegitimate) domains rarely are used for more than a year," said Google, in its application. "Therefore, the date when a domain expires in the future can be used as a factor in predicting the legitimacy of a domain and, thus, the documents associated therewith." Go Daddy is reportedly pointing to the patent as a reason for customers to extend their existing domain registration – thus making their sites appear more "valuable" in the eyes of Google, and potentially boosting their search engine rankings. Search Engine Journal (searchenginejournal.com) editor Loren Baker speculated in a post that the new marketing scheme could "lead to higher conversions of hosting plan sales since any beginner can put up a three or four page site on their hosting partner using Frontpage."
