Equinix, NeuStar Develop Peering Service. 2005-10-25, HostMan.biz Data center operator Equinix (equinix.com) and clearinghouse service provider NeuStar (neustar.biz) announced on Monday that they would develop multi-service Session Initiation Protocol peering exchange for voice over IP and other IP-based services. SIP is the proposed standard for applications such as voice, video, multimedia, instant messaging, multiplayer online games and virtual reality. VoIP and instant messaging are the immediate focus. The companies say the service will lower the costs of VoIP, and more importantly put down the groundwork for the adoption of converged IP-enabled applications in voice, video, gaming, mobility and content streaming. Equinix will contribute its peering expertise to NeuStar's capabilities in SIP standards development. "As the adoption of SIP services, such as VoIP, increases and more sessions are originating and terminating on SIP networks, there is a strong and increasing demand for a high-performance platform for the exchange of these sessions between service providers," says Peter Van Camp, CEO of Equinix. "We are pleased to be working with NeuStar on this important initiative which will provide the vital infrastructure to open the door to a whole new era of converged IP-enabled applications in voice, video, gaming, mobility and content streaming." The service is currently in testing and is slated for introduction in the first half of next year.
