Canada Considers Wiretapping Integration.
2005-10-12, HostMan.biz Reports say the Canadian government has proposed legislation that would force the telecommunications industry to integrate wiretapping capabilities into their networks, enabling surveillance of phone lines, email and the Internet. The legislation was put forward in private negotiations between the government and the telecommunications industry and will reportedly be introduced next month. The government says new laws are merely designed to keep pace with the pace of technological development. Other groups oppose the erosion of privacy such legislation would bring, while the telecommunications companies worry about the costs of implementing these kinds of systems. No financial decision on the extent of the network interception capabilities has been made. However, reports say the capacity could reach more than 8,000 simultaneous interceptions at any time of day. |
