China Wants "Heathy" Web News Only.
2005-09-27, HostMan.biz According to reports released Sunday, China is imposing new regulations to control content on its news Web sites, allowing only the redistribution of what it refers to as "healthy and civilized" news. The censorship is part of China's efforts to supervise the country's enormous 100-million strong Internet population. The new rules have already taken effect, and are intended to "standardize the management of news and information" in the country, according to the official Xinhua News Agency. Sites can now only post news on current events and politics, based on the new regulations issued by the Ministry of Information Industry and China's cabinet, the State Council. However, what subjects were considered acceptable under those terms was not clear. Only "healthy and civilized news and information that is beneficial to the improvement of the quality of the nation, beneficial to its economic development and conducive to social progress" says Xinhua. "The sites are prohibited from spreading news and information that goes against state security and public interest." Although the communist government promotes Internet use for educational and business purposes, it censors any material it deems subversive or pornographic. Online activists who post information that is critical of the government, or those expressing opinions in chat rooms, are regularly arrested and charged under ambiguously worded state security laws. |
