Yahoo! Blamed in Hosting Phishing Sites.
2005-09-09, HostMan.biz Consumer advocacy group Spamhaus accused Yahoo! and other Web hosts this week of housing thousands of fraudulent Web sites that set to exploit Internet users. Spamhaus CIO Richard Cox says that some 5,000 phishing sites that are currently hosted by Yahoo! have domain names that include words such as "bank," "eBay" and "PayPal." But Yahoo! may not be entirely to blame, says Jonathan Penn, an analyst at Forrester Research. The offending sites, he says, are a problem that should be caught at the domain registration level. "Yahoo is just hosting the site," says Jonathan Penn, an analyst at Forrester Research. "Why is the registrar issuing those domain names?" Despite the supporting evidence, Penn says that Yahoo and other Web site hosts are only to be partially blamed, and that this is a problem facing all domain-registration companies and hosting providers. |
