Hurricane Floods Weather Sites.
2005-08-30, HostMan.biz Several US Web sites, including Weather.com, became temporarily unavailable as people swarmed online to find emergency information and news on Hurricane Katrina. Weather.com (weather.com) was out of commission from 6 p.m. to 9:15 p.m. eastern time on Sunday night, as the storm was approaching its Louisiana landfall, says Internet monitoring company Keynote Systems (keynote.com). Availability of the National Weather Service Web site (www.nws.noaa.gov) dropped to 29 percent from 11:15 to 11:45 a.m. Monday from its usual 94 percent to 98 percent. CNN.com and USAToday.com were both feeble on Monday morning with their home pages reportedly loading at 6 seconds and 10 seconds respectively for short periods of time, as compared to their usual 3 or 4 seconds. Availability of ABCNews.com fell as low as 52 percent from 2:00 to 2:30 p.m. on Monday. Keynote's Business 40 Index Internet Performance Index measures the average download time for the home pages of 40 important US-based business Web Sites. |
