LINX Funds Internet Traffic Research.
2005-08-22, HostMan.biz The London Internet Exchange (linx.net) said late last week that it would fund a research and development project at University College London that will examine ways to improve the monitoring of Internet traffic. LINX and the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council will fund the three-year project, headed by researchers Kumardev Chatterjee and Saleem Bhatti. The project will begin monitoring Internet traffic at LINX, one of the world's largest Internet exchange points. "The new project will develop a fully-functional, completely distributed and secure, real-time IXP operational monitoring and reporting system architecture that IXPs can use together to achieve better information sharing and shared network management," says Chatterjee. "This will in turn make Internet traffic management more efficient and robust." LINX, a non-profit organization owned by the ISPs and content delivery providers that connect there, says better monitoring systems could be used to detect distributed denial of service attacks early and improve Internet traffic as a whole. "At present, each IXP uses a different monitoring system, designed for or adapted to its own requirements," says John Souter, chief executive at LINX. "It would be beneficial if IXPs could exchange information and monitor each other's traffic using a common set of tools. A larger user community would enable the tools to be more sophisticated, more reliable and more robust." |
