Akamai Unveils News Site Traffic Tracker.

Content delivery network operator Akamai Technologies (akamai.com) announced on Thursday that it had released the Akamai Net Usage Index for News, a daily Web traffic report that tracks visitors to over 100 different news portal sites.
The index, updated every five minutes, analyzes traffic during major news events, recording aggregate numbers and breaking down the data by geography and time. Data on end users is not being collected.
"In today's 'demand economy' a new generation of online consumer has emerged who is in the position to control how they consume entertainment, communications and commerce," says Paul Sagan, president and CEO of Akamai Technologies. "The news business is a great example of an industry that has needed to revolutionize itself to adapt to the transformation brought on by the Internet. We believe the information that is communicated by this index is an important measurement tool for showing the Internet's pervasive role in our day-to-day lives."
