ICANN Delays .xxx Vote. 2005-08-18, HostMan.biz After some late opposition to the creation of a .xxx domain for adult content, the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers has delayed a vote scheduled for this week until the organization’s next meeting on September 15, 2005. The opposition came from the Bush administration and other national governments, who interrupted the domain creation process for the first time, sending a letter saying that the Department of Commerce had received nearly 6,000 letters and emails “expressing concern aout the impact of pornography on families and children.” ICANN had already approved the creation of a .xxx domain in June, and was expected to approve ICM Registry as the operator of the domain this week. Opposition to the domain came, in most cases, from conservative groups, such as the Family Research Council, which warned that the domain would create more opportunities for “pornographers… to flood our homes, libraries and societies with pornography.” In a very different variety of opposition, the American Civil Liberties Union raised concerns that the creation of the new domain would urge governments to restrict adult sites to the .xxx domain. The month-long delay is expected to give time for concerns to be heard.
