Cisco, ISS Send Takedown Notice to Host.
2005-08-03, HostMan.biz According to reports, Cisco Systems (cisco.com) and Internet Security Systems (iss.net) sent a takedown notice late last week to the Web host responsible for hosting a Web site for security consultant Rick Forno. Forno reportedly posted a briefing that was made by ISS employee Michael Lynn at the Black Hat 2005 security conference in Las Vegas, detailing an exploit technique. The brief was titled, "The Holy Grail: Cisco IOS Shellcode And Exploitation Techniques." However, Lynn was not authorized to reveal the information since ISS had decided not to go ahead with the presentation. Lynn reportedly terminated his employment at Internet Security Systems last Wednesday and was sued along with Black Hat for copyright infringement, misappropriation of trade secrets and breach of employment. According to reports, a settlement had subsequently been reached that required Black Hat to destroy video of the talk and for Lynn to hand over all reference materials. Lynn is also prohibited from discussing any information about the exploit technique in the future. Forno's site is still online, without the offending brief, and including a posting explaining the situation with the takedown notice. Despite the legal measures taken by ISS and Cisco, the information in the briefing has circulated, reports say. As of late Friday afternoon, the briefing was posted at cryptome.org. The report did not indicate which Web hosting company received the notice, but the infowarrior.org site appears to be hosted by Pittsburgh-based Nidhog. |
