Hackers Tapping Free Web Hosting.
2005-07-26, HostMan.biz Employee Internet management solution provider Websense (websense.com) announced on Monday that it had discovered thousands of cases of hackers using free personal Web hosting services to store and distribute malicious code and certain dangerous varieties of spyware. Websense says that since the beginning of 2005, its Websense Security Labs has discovered more than 2,500 instances of these Web sites distributing mobile malicious code, Trojan horses and keyloggers. The company says its software can protect organizations from inadvertently becoming victims of these attacks. In the first two weeks of July, says Websense, the Security Labs found more than 500 sites created on free Web hosting for the purpose of spreading keyloggers, Trojan horse downloaders, Trojan horse droppers and other harmful spyware and malware. The company reported earlier this year that free blogging accounts were being used to harbor similar code, a practice that is now expanding. "The growth of this trend is alarming. July has seen a major boom-in the first two weeks alone we found more instances than in May and June combined," said Dan Hubbard, senior director of security and technology research for Websense. "Some of the sites may be created with automated shared hacking software and free online tools, while others are built to appear more legitimate. For example, one of the sites found by the Labs included music that accompanied a greeting-card message which runs while your computer is being infected with spyware." Websense says the sites last for an average of two to four days, making them difficult to trace. |
