VeriSign, ICANN Reconsider Ceiling Lift.
2005-07-15, HostMan.biz In response to strenuous protests by more than 30 major domain name registrars at the ICANN (icann.org) meetings taking place in Luxembourg, ICANN and VeriSign (verisign.com) have agreed to reconsider a provision in the new .net registry agreement that would reduce the cap on .net listing fees and ultimately eliminate them in 2007, according to research firm Netcraft (netcraft.com). Tim Ruiz of domain registrar and Web hosting provider Go Daddy (godaddy.com), said in an update that "in light of the comments and the concerns from the community, VeriSign is willing to discuss reworking the fee cap provision." According to Netcraft, while ICANN and VeriSign have not made guarantees and have only committed to discussions, the registry community sees the response as a positive sign. They are particularly concerned that a lifting of the cap would set a precedent for the .com domain, which is also controlled by VeriSign. The registrars are also upset that the listing fee cap was negotiated privately. Web hosts are concerned about the implications of removing the listing fee price ceiling. Many hosts are selling large quantities of domains at a loss. While this is considered worthwhile, a price increase resulting from the lack of listing fee caps could deepen the up-front losses hosts are already taking on domains. Netcraft speculates that this could push hosts to consider becoming accredited registrars themselves, as EV1Servers (ev1servers.net) and The Planet (theplanet.com) have done in recent months. |
