Equinix Ups Ethernet Exchange Service.
2005-07-13, HostMan.biz Data center operator Equinix (equinix.com) said on Tuesday that it would roll out 10 gigabit Ethernet capabilities for the Equinix Exchange service in Washington, DC, Silicon Valley, Chicago and New York in by the end of the year. Equinix Exchange facilitates ISP and content peering among Equinix customers through a central switching Fabric. The service, Equinix says, reduces transit costs for companies operating in its Internet Business Exchange centers by allowing them to directly connect to each other, eliminating intermediate network backbones. The company says the enhanced capabilities will enable networks, content companies, and content delivery networks using the service to increase their network data exchange capacity by a factor of ten. Limelight Networks, Time Warner Telecom and nLayer will be the first companies migrating to the new service - enabled by Force10 Networks' TeraScale E-Series switching and routing devices. "As peering relationships have become the fundamental means by which all Internet traffic, from email to video, is interchanged between networks, Equinix is committed to providing the most high-performance platform of traffic exchange services," says Jay Adelson founder and CTO of Equinix. "After more than a year of testing the stability, scalability and reliability of options, we are introducing 10 Gigabit capacity that will enable Equinix customers to further leverage the performance enhancements and cost reductions of scalable peering, while solidifying Equinix's position as the premiere provider of peering and network exchange services." Equinix Exchange is currently available in Equinix's US IBX centers located in the greater New York, Washington, DC, Los Angeles, Chicago, Dallas, and Silicon Valley areas, and in Equinix's Asia-Pacific region IBX centers in Sydney, Australia, Hong Kong, Singapore, and Tokyo, Japan. |
