NYC Residents Angry Over Fuel Storage.
2005-07-11, HostMan.biz Residents of TriBeCa in New York are angry that the city is allowing a telecommunications hotel near ground zero to store a reported 80,000 gallons of diesel fuel, according to a report by New York Newsday. The 24-story facility is home to the likes of Verizon, MCI and Sprint. The fuel would be used to power backup generators in the event of a blackout. Residents are concerned that the fuel presents a prime target for terrorist attack, especially because of its proximity to schools, subway stations and 7 World Trade Center, one of the remaining facilities of the original World Trade Center complex. The twin towers stored 40,000 gallons of diesel fuel when it was attacked on September 11, 2001. Buildings are permitted to store 275 gallons of fuel per floor above ground, as long as additional safety precautions are met. However, there are no such stipulations for fuel being stored underground, which is where the majority is being stored in this facility. The city says it has taken proper measures to make the area safe for the fuel's storage. |
