ICANN to Lift Ceiling for .Net Fees. 2005-07-11, HostMan.biz ICANN (icann.org) says it will lift the restrictions on VeriSign's pricing of .net domains after January 1, 2007, a move that could be indicative of ICANN's desire to stop regulating domain name pricing, according to a report by research and analysis firm Netcraft (netcraft.com). A newly signed contract reduces the registry fee cap price from $6.00 to $4.25. But In 2007, the cap will be abolished altogether. According to the deal, VeriSign must give six months notice for any price changes and must allow registrants to lock in their domains with multi-year renewals at current prices. Hosting companies have been using domains as loss leaders in an attempt to attract customers. But with the fee cap eliminated, registrars will have the ability to raise their prices. Hosts could see the result as just a rise in the cost of business. But as Netcraft notes, it could also motivate hosts to become registrars themselves. The Planet, EV1Servers and 1&1 Internet are already ICANN-accredited registrars. Becoming a registrar would reduce wholesale domain costs. VeriSign was tapped by ICANN in early June to retain control over the .net registry.
