News Sites Slow After London Attacks.
2005-07-08, HostMan.biz Several news Web sites had trouble staying online on Thursday morning as a result of the surge in Internet traffic following the bombings on the London public transit system. A variety of sources report that the BBC and Reuters Web sites suffered brief outages in the hours immediately following the attacks, which took place over an approximately 45-minute period beginning at 8:51 a.m. UK-based research and analysis firm Netcraft (netcraft.com) said the BBC limited images on its home page in order to lighten the load on its servers. Reuters performed better, Netcraft said, but many users received system messages saying the server was too busy to respond. Performance for both sites improved throughout the day. There were no reports of performance problems with major US news sites. While news sites in the UK suffered, blogs were a popular source for up-to-date information about the attacks. According to blog search engine Technorati.com (technorati.com), postings were up almost 30 percent in the 11 hours after the attacks and queries related to the attacks dominated blog searches. |
