Strike at Web Host Amen Continues.
2005-04-25, HostMan.biz The strike at the France, UK and Spain operations of Web hosting provider Amen (amenworld.com) continued through the weekend with no sign yet of the situation being resolved, according to the blog amenengreve.info (amenengreve.info/en). Beginning on April 14, workers at Amen's three European operations took strike action, demanding written guarantees of their employment following the acquisition of Amen’s parent company Via Net.Works by Claranet (claranet.com). As of last week, 100 percent of Amenworld UK and Amen Spain workers were on strike and 90 percent of customer service representatives at Amen France are on strike. After several failed attempts, a meeting between Via CEO Ray Walsh and striking representatives for Amen France took place as planned on April 21. The meeting lasted for a reported 45 minutes and no progress was made. According to the blog, Walsh said he would not include employment guarantees in the company's final negotiations with Claranet. Meanwhile, the strikers are demanding guarantees that all jobs will be kept with no change to position or salary for a period of at least 12 months after the takeover. The strikers also demanded no technical migration, no movement to the regional office locations and the reinstatement of fired chief technical officer Olivier Ruffin. Walsh only made one proposal – an agreement to pay employees for the strike days if they immediately returned to work. The parties held a telephone conversation the following day and no progress was reported. The Claranet acquisition of Via was to be completed over the weekend, but no announcement from the parties involved has been made. The blog says the customer service situation at Amen is deteriorating, with over 2,000 support queries building up in the system. The number is normally 400. |
