DDoS Attack Hits Final Fantasy XI Game. 2005-04-19, HostMan.biz According to a report by research and analysis firm Netcraft (netcraft.com), distributed denial of service attacks on The Final Fantasy XI virtual world caused significant downtime in the past week, a sign that multi-player online role playing games could become a target of DDoS blackmail schemes. Square Enix (square-enix.com), the company that runs the game, confirmed that its servers were specifically targeted for attack starting on April 9, 2005. The company says it had notified authorities, but did not say whether it received requests for payment. In a typical scenario, the Web site is attacked and taken offline. A demand for payment from the attacker follows.
