GeoTrust Points Out Phishing Threats.
2005-04-13, HostMan.biz Identity verification solutions provider GeoTrust (geotrust.com) announced on Tuesday it has released a white paper entitled "Vulnerability of First-Generation Digital Certificates and Potential for Phishing Attacks and Consumer Fraud" that discusses the many risks for fraud associated with the first-generation style of authentication used by many certificate authorities. GeoTrust also announced the results of the April 2005 Netcraft study that revealed second-generation SSL certificate authentication methods growing at a rate twice that of first generation manually-based authentication processes. The April Netcraft survey is the first time that the Internet research firm has divided the market for SSL certificates into "domain-validated" and "organization-validated" groups. Over the past six months, second-generation domain-validated certificates have nearly doubled the sales of first-generation organization-validated certificates, comprising more than 70 percent of the growth in the SSL market. "Manual vetting of organizations creates a huge vulnerability that can be used to the benefit of phishers and identity thieves," says Howard A. Schmidt, former White House cyber security advisor and previous CSO of both Microsoft and eBay. "I hope that certification authorities who are still using first-generation processes will understand why they should migrate to advanced authentication without delay." Following the release of Netcraft's data, certification authority Comodo cautioned that domain-validated certificates fail to provide the level of security that organization-validated certificates offer. |
