Verizon to Buy 13.7 Percent MCI Stake. 2005-04-11, HostMan.biz According to reports, Verizon (verizon.com) said on Saturday that it has agreed to buy the 13.7 percent stake in MCI (mci.com) held by Mexican telecommunications magnate Carlos Slim Helu. Verizon will reportedly pay $1.1 billion in cash. The deal comes just a few days after MCI rejected Qwest's Communications (qwest.com) latest acquisition offer, believed to be worth approximately $9 billion. MCI has already accepted a $7.6 billion takeover offer from Verizon, but has received two counteroffers from Qwest since. Verizon has given MCI permission to negotiate with Qwest. Verizon’s $1.1 billion payout would give Helu a higher price for his MCI shares than other shareholders would receive according to Verizon’s acquisition offer. Analysts say this move could recast the battle for MCI, which has raged for over two months. Qwest believes the deal raises doubt about the superiority of the Verizon offer. Verizon says it will continue to assess the situation up to the MCI shareholder vote and MCI has declined to comment. Some analysts suggest Qwest may launch a hostile bid. According to research firm Netcraft (netcraft.com), MCI is the world's ninth largest host, home to 878,000 hostnames. Verizion and Qwest both covet its large enterprise customer base.
