Pharming Scams Could Grow, Anlaysts Say. 2005-04-08, HostMan.biz Analysts say a new scam known as pharming could grow significantly in the coming months in the same way phishing has exploded. Pharming attacks automatically direct Internet users from legitimate Web sites to fraudulent copies, without warning. The fraudulent sited then attempt to collect private and sensitive information, such as credit card numbers and passwords. Analysts say pharming could be more harmful in the future because it is much harder to detect than phishing. Pharming scams operates through fake Web sites and,unlike phishing, do not require users to respond with actions - in the case of phishing, the opening of an email that would link to the bogus site. Pharming eliminates that step, taking users directly to the offending site. Pharming can take several forms, but they all exploit the domain name system, which translates a Web site’s address into numerical code. For example, hackers could break into an Internet service provider’s DNS servers and switch addresses stored in its cache into fake addresses. Although some experts remain skeptical about pharming's potential danger, there have been reports of pharming scams in recent months.
