DNSSec Deployment Looks Likely.
2005-04-07, HostMan.biz An initiative to deploy new security features on the Internet's aging domain name system was launched this week, with the backing of the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers and funding from the US Department of Homeland Security. Steve Crocker, head of the DNSSec Deployment Initiative (dnssec-deployment.org), said Wednesday that he expects DNSSec support to be added to the DNS root server system by the end of 2005. He said an agreement had been reached at a meeting with ICANN staff and root server operators. DNSSec is designed to extend traditional DNS standards with a cryptographic signature check on each DNS lookup. A lack of adequate security could leave Internet users open to malicious attacks. The new security system would require each stage of a DNS lookup to be authenticated. Companies with .com addresses would be authenticated by the .com servers, which would in turn be authenticated by the root. The root would be authenticated with a public key. |
