MCI Rejects Third Qwest Offer. 2005-04-06, HostMan.biz Internet service and Web hosting provider MCI (mci.com) said on Wednesday that it has rejected Qwest Communications's (qwest.com) latest acquisition offer. The company says it carefully reviewed the financial terms, merger-related conditions, market risks and potential customer reaction to the offer, believed to be worth approximately $8.9 billion, and concluded that Verizon's (verizon.com) $7.6 billion offer was still superior. MCI says it also considered negative customer reaction in addition to the risks of Qwest's significant financial liabilities. MCI says that it asked Qwest to improve some of the offer's financial and other terms. Qwest rejected the request and says the offer is its best proposal. Verizon's first successful bid to acquire MCI, in February, was worth $6.7 billion. Qwest tabled a revised offer after it lost out on the bidding and subsequently raised its offer to $8 billion. Shortly after, Verizon submitted a $7.6 billion bid, which was accepted by MCI. The third Qwest bid of $8.9 billion came after Verizon agreed to allow MCI to negotiate with Qwest. Both companies covet MCI because of its large base of government and large business customers. Qwest has made repeated efforts to acquire MCI, say analysts, because of its concerns that it would have difficulty remaining independent as the telecom industry continues to consolidate.
