VeriSign Secures 90% of Tax Prep Sites.

Internet infrastructure service provider VeriSign (verisign.com) announced on Tuesday that it had secured ninety percent of the 20 tax preparation Web sites authorized by the United States Internal Revenue Service to offer free filing services in 2005 with VeriSign secure socket layer certificates.
The company says the VeriSign Secured Seal gives taxpayers confidence when filing their taxes on free tax preparation Web sites. Display of the VeriSign Secured Seal on Web sites, VeriSign says, indicates use of a VeriSign security solution that authenticates the identity of a user, secures the user's payment processing and protects sensitive customer information during online transactions.
"The presence of SSL-based security is an essential part of any Web exchange involving confidential information," says Chad Kinzelberg, vice president of security services at VeriSign. "VeriSign is a long-time leader in Web-based security and e-commerce transactions, and our participation in the protection of the IRS's electronic filing process gives taxpayers a high degree of confidence when filing their tax returns online."
