Qwest Ups MCI Bid to $8.9 Billion.
2005-04-01, HostMan.biz Internet service and Web hosting provider MCI (mci.com) said on Thursday that it had received yet another acquisition offer from Qwest Communications (qwest.com), just days after MCI accepted a sweetened bid from Verizon (verizon.com) valued at $7.6 billion. Qwest's latest offer is reportedly worth $8.9 billion. MCI says its board of directors will review the revised offer and respond accordingly. Verizon's first successful bid to acquire MCI, in February, was worth $6.7 billion. Qwest tabled a revised offer after it lost out on the bidding and subsequently raised its offer to $8 billion. Qwest's concerted efforts were made because of the company's concern that it would have difficulty remaining independent as the telecom industry continues to consolidate, reports say. There were also indications that MCI shareholders were unhappy with the Verizon bid. Both companies covet MCI because of its large base of government and large business customers. Reports say MCI favors the Verizon bids because of the company’s stronger financial position and potential for growth. |
