Hackers Exploit New Redirect Tactic. 2005-03-08, HostMan.biz Hackers have discovered a way to redirect unsuspecting visitors of popular Web sites to malicious URL's that contain spyware and adware, according to a report posted Friday by security firm The Internet Storm Centre. The report calls the tactic "DNS cache poisoning" and claims that the affected Web sites included google.com, ebay.com, and weather.com. The hackers attacked a domain name server, infecting the cache with counterfeit data. However, there have been conflicting reports by other security firms in the confirmation of the attack, many of which scoured Google and ebay all day Friday without finding a single poisoned DNS. And while it is conceivable that the sites had been fixed, it is more likely that the hack is localized to an enterprise or small Internet service provider. According to the UK Storm Centre, the infected DNS cache has affected Symantec firewalls with DNS caching. Some victims have reported that despite applying the patch, they were still affected, suggesting that either it may be a different vulnerability altogether or an ineffective patch. The ABX toolbar spyware that is automatically downloaded onto users computers when visiting the target servers uses an ActiveX control. Users running Windows XP SP2 or a Web browser that does not support ActiveX will not download the spyware because ABX is not detected yet by the normal toolset of spyware and antivirus tools.
