Sun Boosts SPARC Performance.
2005-02-24, HostMan.biz Sun Microsystems (sun.com) announced on Wednesday that it boosted performance across its UltraSPARC IV processor-based server family in order to optimize its systems to run multithreaded, data-centric workloads, a move the company says reinforces its commitment to the Solaris operating system for the SPARC platform. According to Sun, the new UltraSPARC IV 1.35 GHz processor gives customers more than twice the throughput at a 34 percent better price for performance ratio when compared to the fastest UltraSPARC III systems. The new system can also be mixed and matched with previous UltraSPARC III and UltraSPARC IV processors. Sun says the servers for its UltraSPARC platform deliver higher performance, utilization, security and reliability, availability and serviceability, enabling SLA compliance. "Sun reinforces its vision to create the next-generation data center providing customers with technology innovation and the best price and performance through its UltraSPARC processor-based servers," says David Yen, Sun's executive vice president, Scalable Systems. "Today's announcement is further evidence of Sun's commitment to the Solaris OS for SPARC platform roadmap to deliver throughput computing to optimize customer workloads and increase application performance in the data center. Each of the upgraded servers will be compatible with the latest version of Solaris in order to take full advantage of all its new features and functionality while supporting existing versions to ensure customer's investments are protected." Sun also unveiled a new world record benchmark for the combination of the new 1.35 GHz processor and Solaris. |
