IBM Updates Server Strategy. 2005-02-23, HostMan.biz According to an interview posted on InformationWeek.com, IBM (ibm.com) has launched a four-way Intel server that leverages mainframe technology, part of the company's server strategy designed to differentiate it from rivals Hewlett-Packard and Dell. Tim Dougherty, director for eServer BladeCenter Systems for IBM's Systems and Technology Group said in the interview that the use of mainframe technology would give the company a significant advantage in the four-way space and serve as a trump card over HP, its main rival in the blade market. IBM's server strategy, says Dougherty, is focused on blade servers on one end and eServers on the high end. The company has invested over $100 million on this technology in the last three years, he says. IBM continues to focus its efforts on the blade server market. Last October, IBM announced it would open up some of the specifications for its blade servers. Analysts say the new specification program is part of IBM's attempt to establish a standard blade design in the industry – a design the company hopes will be its own. Dougherty also told InformationWeek that IBM is working on "soft" bundling Citrix, SAP and VMware software with its servers.
