HP Deploys Cisco for European IDCs.
2005-02-23, HostMan.biz Cisco Systems (cisco.com) announced on Wednesday that Hewlett Packard's (hp.com) European operations have deployed its optical transport and storage area network technology solutions, a move Cisco said would help HP improve the management and resilience of its mission-critical data. "The Cisco optical networking and SAN solution is one of the first of its kind to be deployed in HP and it demonstrates how organizations can use networking technology to optimize existing resources and protect investments, whilst improving performance and reducing operating costs," says Marcus Chambers, director of operations for storage and optical business at Cisco Systems, Europe the Middle East and Africa. HP will also use Cisco equipment to connect data centers in Grenoble and Isle d'Abeau, France, which are 84 kilometers apart. This network supports more than 41 terabytes of data and applications running on more than 250 HP Proliant servers. HP deployed the Cisco ONS 15540 dense wavelength division multiplexing optical transport platform to provide the high-capacity link between the data centers with Cisco Catalyst 6509 switches and Cisco MDS 9509 Multilayer SAN Directors. HP said the overall solution is five times more cost-effective than enhancing the existing storage capacity of the two data centers. "As part of its pan-European data center consolidation effort, HP determined that expanding capacity in France and networking two data centers was a better proposition than physically expanding one of the data centers," says Patrick de Marcillac, European infrastructure manager for HP. "Thanks to this solution developed with Cisco, we now have an infrastructure that will enable us to offer more data management services to our customers. Through the strong synergy of the HP Adaptive Enterprise strategy and Cisco's Intelligent Information Network vision, HP and Cisco are creating and growing new markets while we continue to deliver the best 'total customer experience." |
