Google Looking for Dark Fiber.
2005-01-19, HostMan.biz According to reports published this week, a recent job posting by Internet search giant Google is raising some speculation as to just what the company's long term plans might involve. Google reportedly placed a job posting on its Web site, seeking a strategic negotiator with experience in negotiating contracts for dark fiber. The posting referred to the unlit fiber optic cable as part of the development of a global backbone network. The company has not offered a comment elaborating on the job posting, but the network-building reference has raised some speculation as to the intended use of the capacity. Though organizations with extreme network capacity demands to invest in their own fiber, the posting has also invited speculation that Google might be looking to move into the telecommunications market at some point. There may be little evidence to support that kind of conjecture, however, as experts point out that the acquisition of dark fiber may just be an investment, and that the skills described in the job posting are generally a good fit at a large IT organization. |
