Yahoo Desktop Search Beta Released. 2005-01-11, HostMan.biz Yahoo! released it's Desktop Search yesterday, according to a post made on the Yahoo! Search Blog. This follows closely behind similar desktop search applications recently launched by Google, Microsoft and Ask Jeeves, all of which are still in Beta. Admitting the desktop search space has become crowded, the post lists several reasons why the Yahoo! Desktop Search (YDS) differs from the rest, primary amongst them being speed. It indexes over 200 file types and renders a preview for most of them along with the search results. It also provides an incremental search feature, similar to Firefox, as each character is typed, the results are updated instantly. YDS also features enhanced privacy protection measures. Unlike the Google Desktop Search, it does not index Internet Explorer's cache and browsing history. Users can submit feedback on the YDS message board. "We don't think you should have to think about where your stuff is stored in order to find it. That's where this is all headed. And as YDS evolves, you'll see that becoming more and more clear," said Bradley Horowitz and Jeremy Zawodny in the blog post. This release comes a month after Yahoo! announced their decision to release a desktop search application.
